Discovery Channel Search For Alien Planets

"A spacecraft from another solar system invades the night sky. But this is not our sky, and we are the invaders. The search for alien life has begun." So begins Alien Planet, a Discovery Channel production that combines cutting-edge computer animation and video technology, interspersed with interviews of top scientists and filmmakers (Stephen Hawking and George Lucas, among others), to examine what life might really be like on another planet. Darwin IV, the subject of this interstellar journey, is home to a wild variety of dinosaur-like creatures, bizarre beasts, and exotic vegetation of every kind. The idea is human beings have sent an unmanned spacecraft, packed with computer-driven droids--something right out of Star Wars--to a planet 6.5 light years away. We follow along as the probes explore the planet and encounter aliens and situations of every kind, as the scientists weigh in on what they think we might really find there, and why. It’s all motivated and informed by real missions being undertaken today. While it’s all speculative, the story itself is still fascinating and events unfold according to the laws of physics, just as they would here on earth. The viewer experiences Darwin IV through the eyes of the probes; the spectacular computer animation offers stunning recreations of their explorations, and the creatures the writers have come up with are highly imaginative. The scientists’ insights add to the experience by explaining the thinking behind the moments in the story, and by being appropriately relatable (one contributor compares sending the unmanned probes to the planet to watching your child at a spelling bee, hoping they make the right choice). While it’s obvious that Alien Planet is a great show for students and educators, its appeal is far wider,this is a highly entertaining program that should feed the imagination of anyone who’s ever wondered about life on other planets.

Fox TV and the Apollo Moon Hoax

n Thursday, February 15th 2001 (and replayed on March 19), the Fox TV network aired a program called ``Conspiracy Theory: Did We Land on the Moon?'', hosted by X-Files actor Mitch Pileggi. The program was an hour long, and featured interviews with a series of people who believe that NASA faked the Apollo Moon landings in the 1960s and 1970s. The biggest voice in this is Bill Kaysing, who claims to have all sorts of hoax evidence, including pictures taken by the astronauts, engineering details, discussions of physics and even some testimony by astronauts themselves. The program's conclusion was that the whole thing was faked in the Nevada desert (in Area 51, of course!). According to them, NASA did not have the technical capability of going to the Moon, but pressure due to the Cold War with the Soviet Union forced them to fake it.

Sound ridiculous? Of course it does! It is. So let me get this straight right from the start: this program is an hour long piece of junk.
From the very first moment to the very last, the program is loaded with bad thinking, ridiculous suppositions and utterly wrong science. I was able to get a copy of the show in advance, and although I was expecting it to be bad, I was still surprised and how awful it was. I took four pages of notes. I won't subject you to all of that here; it would take hours to write. I'll only go over some of the major points of the show, and explain briefly why they are wrong. In the near future, hopefully by the end of the summer, I will have a much more detailed series of pages taking on each of the points made by the Hoax Believers (whom I will call HBs).

The Greatest Places begins by noting that Earth is "the most diverse planet in the solar system," and impressive computer-generated graphics depict the very early history of the planet, showing vividly how geological events formed the continents. Particular sites around the world (the "greatest places" of the title) are then visited, and some dazzling cinematography displays the exotic locations spectacularly. A trip into the jungles of Madagascar demonstrates how the island, isolated as it was for 40 million years, developed unique wildlife, including many species of lemurs. High atop the Tibetan plateau, nomads are seen herding yaks and Buddhist pilgrims are filmed against the stunning peaks of the Himalayas. A "holy lake" in Tibet dissolves into a shot of the mighty Amazon River, and the ecosystem of the South American jungle is explored. And the world's largest island, Greenland, is scanned by cameras that linger on the sheer enormity of glaciers as well as on the native peoples who manage to live at extreme low temperatures. Near the end of the film the narrator notes that "life is a reflection of the landscape." And the breathtaking film shot in these remote but magnificent locales does demonstrate beautifully the awesome diversity of both landscape and life on Earth.

AMAZON - This mightiest of rivers forms a network of water channels that permeates nearly half of South America.



GREENLAND - Harsh, foreboding and almost completely buried beneath a cap of permanent ice and snow. Greenland is the world's largest island. It is estimated that some 10,000 to 15,000 icebergs are calved by Greenland's glaciers each year.



IGUAZU FALLS - Strung out along the rim of a crescent-shaped cliff about 2.5 miles long, some 275 individual cascades and waterfalls plummet up to 269 feet into the gorge below. The thunderous roaring can be heard from miles away.



NAMIB DESERT - Stretching 1,200 miles in length, but averaging a width of only 70 miles, the Namib Desert is home to the highest sand dunes in the world.

Unsolved Mysteries killing hilter



Kill Hitler covers much more than the failed attempt to murder the Fuhrer in 1944. It in effect traces the opposition inherent in the Wehrmacht from the first days of Hitler's ascendancy as chancellor, exploring a number of issues that deprived Hitler of ever achieving the completely loyal support of army officers that he demanded when he declared himself Fuhrer upon the death of von Hindenburg. It discusses several plots to arrest or kill Hitler, the first important example of which came before the secession of part of Czechoslovakia to Germany; ironically, it was the fervent initiatives of France and England, personified in Neville Chamberlain's determination to avoid war at any cost, that derailed a move that could have removed Hitler from power long before World War II ever began. The fluid history of the relationship between the Wehrmacht and Hitler is covered quite well here and proves nothing short of fascinating. The entire collection of Unsolved Mysteries of World War II videos is quite impressive, and I believe this particular tape to be the best of the series.

The British Empire's legacy to India is the subcontinent's railway system. This video, released in 1995, is in widescreen format and has a feature-film feel to it, with re-created scenes in sepia contributing to its extremely atmospheric mood. Light Yagami is a 17-year old kid who's top in his class yet has a pretty normal life aside from his incessant studying. One day his eyes fall over a notebook laying on the ground outside of his school. Reading the English cover, "Death Note," and noticing that the writing inside is also in English, Light decides to take it home to read it. Within the next 5 days, Light has already killed many just by watching and recording names of criminals from the news. The Death Note enables him to kill anyone whose face and real name is known. To know more about the rules of the notebook read the terms of the Death Note. Picking up the notebook once more, a monstrous creature appears and speaks to Light, introducing himself as a Shinigami (God of Death) named Ryuk. Ryuk tells Light that only the owner of the Death Note can see him and that he, Light, is now the owner of it and may use it as he chooses. If Light does not want to keep the notebook, he may give it to someone else and Ryuk will erase all related memories from his mind. The notebook bonds both Light and Ryuk, but any mental pain will be delivered to Light alone. He then decides that no matter what it takes, no matter who gets involved, Light will cleanse the world of evil criminals. Although Light is doing a pretty good job gathering up bad guys, when he is interrupted by a top detective by the label "L."

Who is L? And who is the real antagonist?

Death Note started as a Japanese manga in 2003 serialized by Shueisha in Weekly Shonen Jump, written by Tsugumi Ohba and illustrated by Takeshi Obata. The plot of Death Note centers on a high school student who decides to rid the world of evil with the help of a supernatural notebook that kills anyone whose name is written in it. The manga series went onto be published a series of graphic novels.

Death NoteDeath Note was then adapted into a pair of live-action films (released in Japan on June and November, 2006), and also became an anime series which went on the air in October of 2006. But it doesn't end there, a novelization of the series by light Nisio Isin was released in Japan during the Summer of 2006.
